Fake Facebook Giveaways

Posted by pgadmin | February 21st, 2016

FLfakeThere have been a recent rash of fake giveaways on Facebook, specifically using the brand’s Birthday as the event. Bad things may happen if you click the link.

If you look closely at the URL (address of the site) you will see that it is NOT the same address of the brand. In some cases, clicking the link could lead to getting a virus on your computer. The latest Cryptowall virus can cost you somewhere between $500 and $3000.

In most cases, clicking the link shares the post on your behalf and ultimately supports a black market for advertising. The bad guys trick people into sharing and liking the fake posts, then sell that data (numbers, demographics, even detailed account info) to other parties, who can sell them to anyone who values that data.

Either way you are putting yourself at risk by clicking on them. When was the last time you got something for nothing? If it sounds too good to be true…
